Struggle with Self-Discipline? You need to hear this!
Issue 16
In this weeks Donnelly Mindset, we’ll be discussing the benefits of becoming self-disciplined and the art of mastering it.
Right, where do we start?
Do you ever find yourself slacking when it comes to completing certain tasks? Keeping fit? Or eating a healthy nutritious diet?
If so, you could be missing DISCIPLINE in your life.
Practicing self-discipline will take time and lots of practice but the results will be worth it.
So you’re probably wondering, how do I start and what’s in it for me?
Firstly, I would start with identifying your strengths and weaknesses in your day to day life. For example you feel like your unfit but want to change this, this would identify as one of your weaknesses and a solution would be to take more walks, run or go to the gym. You can add discipline to this by creating a set workout routine allocating specific time, setting clear and precise goals with what you want to achieve.
One of your strengths may be that you’re already eating a well balanced diet but may have to make a few adjustments according to your training plan but this will be a lot easier as you are already disciplined in this part of your life.
Creating a more disciplined life doesn’t have to be hard. You can simply make some small changes by choosing to not get on a bus on the commute to work and opting to walk instead. You decide you need to eat healthier, remove all bad foods from your shopping list. But still allow for a treat twice a week as long as you keep exercising you can still treat yourself in moderation, otherwise you’re likely to get bored of your new diet pretty quick if you switch one extreme to another.
I have shown you a few examples of how to make changes. Now I will tell you what you can do to start making changes daily. Practice, practice and practice, that’s the first thing. It’s going to take time and it’s something you’ll never stop improving.
Hold yourself accountable daily, at the end of the each day reflect and ask yourself, if you’ve done what you were suppose to do. This will allow you to identify weaknesses and then turn them into strengths. Focus on what you can do better the next day to improve your self-discipline.
Remember small daily wins lead to big results, I always say this to you as I’m a big believer in thinking this way.
This is what I would do if I wanted to become more disciplined in a certain area of my life, I’d start with creating new habits aligned with what you want to change and what your desired outcome is. As you get better at this and realise your self-discipline is getting stronger then and only then you can stack more habits on the previous once you’ve created. Atomic Habits by James Clear explains it well. Click here! if you’d like to read it.
