Procrasti-what?

Issue 15

In this weeks Donnelly Mindset, I’m going to talk about procrastination. How do you stop your mind from wandering off into a day dream, when you should be focused and working instead.

What is it?

Why do you do it?

You experience procrastination due to the fear of failure and trying to perfect everything. This leads to you putting off important tasks even though you know you should be completing them. Delaying your tasks can then lead to feeling overwhelmed, making you less likely to take action towards your goals.

Fear of failure is the biggest cause of procrastination. This can stop us before we even get started. We must learn that we have to fail to move forward, as without failure you’ll never succeed. Businesses are built on people failing thousands of times, before they finally get their breakthrough or lucky break as some may call it. When in reality, there’s been many attempts and failures leading up to that point but we don’t ever see that, we always see the finished product.

Do not let fear of failure hold you back, learn to go from failure to win, it’s all part of the process.

There are 3 main reasons which can cause you to procrastinate.

  • Lack of knowledge - Do you have sufficient knowledge in your specific business? If you lack knowledge, you will suffer from procrastination because instead of doing what you’re meant to do, you will put your tasks off. It’s important that you never stop learning, no matter how experienced you think you are. Always make time for studying.

  • Lack of skill - Do you have the right skill set for your current career path or business? If you are currently lacking the skills you need to progress, this is something that can always be improved. Take courses, study online, get a mentor or even learn from free youtube videos. Improving your skill set can give you more confidence causing you to procrastinate less.

  • Confusion - Having no long term vision can lead to you feeling confused and unsure what to when it comes to taking action. Setting clear and precise goals that align with your purpose will give you the clarity you need.

I’m going to share with you a few ways that you can kill procrastination and start working towards building your dream life.

How to KILL Procrastination

  • Create steps to your plan (break down the task into smaller steps)

  • Set yourself deadlines on completing your tasks

  • Create a time management planner (notion)

  • Structure your day by having to do lists or time blocks

  • Work for 45 mins then allow yourself 15 mins break, you’ll come back more focused

  • Step away from your desk, take a short walk

  • Commit to your task

  • Remove any distractions from your workplace
